The Curran Theatre will present the North American premiere of a multicultural re-interpretation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, May 6-June 1. Directed by Tim Supple, this production is the culmination of a project that began in autumn 2004 when the British Council in India and Sri Lanka commissioned him to create and direct a new touring theater production.

The cast for A Midsummer Night's Dream is a multi-cultural troupe of 23 performers from a hugely diverse range of locations and backgrounds. Performed in English, this production also incorporates Tamil, Malayalam, Sinhalese, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, and some Sanskrit. Supple's re-interpretation combines sensuous choreography, contemporary scenic elements, and bold music with this comedic tale of romance and magic to make a production moving to an urban beat that resonates for hip, young audiences.

The creative team will include set and costume designs by Sumant Jayakrishnan, lighting design by Zuleikha Chaudhari, and music direction by Devissaro.

NIGHTMARE ON GEARY ST.

This performances was terrible. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY. Several people walked out . We felt as though we needed subtitles across the theatre. Nothing appealing about this performance. Not even the woman. Such a disappointment. I have seen high school performances do better. Everything from the sound to the acting was terrible. I kept on waiting for something that never happened. I can not believe the SHNSF brought this to SF. As a season ticket holder I am upset.

Loved it. Challenging, but overall the ensemble, set, and music were great, and the passion and comedy came through clear and compellingly in all 8 languages.

This was more of a nightmare! Many people were very disappointed at intermission and left. The play was extremely hard to follow with the many languages spoken, the least being English. It was also harsh with all the screaming/yelling going on.
