Howes, Nichols, Siberry, York, et al. Win 2008 Carbonell Awards

The winners of the 2008 Carbonell Awards for excellence in South Florida theater and road shows in Florida were announced in a ceremony at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, April 7.

In addition to locally known performers, the winners included Broadway stars Sally Ann Howes, Tim Jerome, Michael Siberry, and Rachel York, along with director Mike Nichols.

Best New Work, Play or Musical (award to author):
Michael McKeever, Melt, New Theatre

Best Ensemble Production, Play or Musical (award to company):
Glengarry Glen Ross, Mosaic Theatre

Best Production of a Play (award to producer):
The Lieutenant of Inishmore, GableStage

Best Director/Play:
Joseph Adler, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, GableStage

Best Actor/Play:

Best Actress/Play:
Lela Elam, In the Continuum, GableStage

Best Supporting Actor/Play:

Best Supporting Actress/Play:
Kim Morgan, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, GableStage

Best Production of a Musical (award to producer):
Man of La Mancha, Maltz Jupiter Theatre

Best Director/Musical:
Peter Flynn, Man of La Mancha, Maltz Jupiter Theatre

Best Actor/Musical:
Gary Marachek, La Cage aux Folles, Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre

Best Actress/Musical:
Irene Adjan, Funny Girl, New Vista Theatre Company

Best Supporting Actor/Musical:
Jim Ballard, Urinetown, Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre

Best Supporting Actress/Musical:
Rachel Jones, Urinetown, Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre

Best Musical Direction:
David Nagy, Urinetown, Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre

Best Choreography/Musical:
Denis Jones, The Boy Friend, Maltz Jupiter Theatre

Best Scenic Design:

Best Lighting Design:

Best Costume Design:

Best Supporting Actress: Sally Ann Howes as Mrs. Higgins, My Fair Lady
Best Scenic Design: Anthony Ward, My Fair Lady
Best Lighting Design: Hugh Vanstone, Monty Python's Spamalot

Special Awards:
Bill Von Maurer Award for Theatrical Excellence to Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre for excellence in the totality of its programming: productions, educational outreach, developmental programs and audiences served.

George Abbott Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts to Jack Zink, a Carbonell Awards co-founder and South Florida Sun-Sentinel entertainment writer; he won the award in 1989 and has been recognized again for his continuing role in the South Florida arts industry.

Bill Hindman Award to Rafael de Acha, a founder of New Theatre in Coral Gables. New Theatre produces classics, modern drama, and new works including the commissioning and staging of the premiere of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Anna in the Tropics by Nilo Cruz.

Howard Kleinberg Award to Theatre League of South Florida, for its contribution to the health and development of the arts in South Florida including an annual spring theater festival, theater directory program stuffers, unified auditions, a published talent directory, and health insurance for its members.

Ruth Foreman Award to Michael Hall, Caldwell Theatre Company's Artistic and Managing Director, for the 2007 opening of the Count de Hoernle Theatre.
