Actor Earl Hindman, known to TV viewers as Wilson on ABC's long-running Home Improvement series, died yesterday at a hospital in Connecticut. He was 61.

Though one of the series's running jokes was the perpetual obscuring of part of Hindman's face, the actor was on full view in the long-running daytime drama Ryan's Hope. His film credits include The Parallax View, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Taps, and Three Men and a Baby.

Hindman performed on Broadway in The Love Suicide at Schofield Barracks and The Lincoln Mask. Off-Broadway, he was seen in Dark of the Moon, The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel, The Dark at the Top of the Stairs, Red and Blue, Henry V, and, most recently, the Theatre for a New Audience productions of Cymbeline and Julius Caesar.

He is survived by his wife, mother, brother, and sister.
