Synopsis
OPERA + BEER = ART
"A casual free-wheeling affair... At one table a group of graying men and women, some with their eyes closed, listen knowingly, and at the next a handful of 20-somethings are drinking beer and whistling in support...." - New York Times, Steven McElroy
Opera on Tap, a beer-swilling ensemble of young professional singers and instrumentalists (OOT artists have also performed with NYC Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opera National de Lyon and the NY Philharmonic) takes opera out of the concert hall and into the bar. They perform the second Thursday of every month at Freddy's Bar and Backroom (ESQUIRE'S BEST BAR'S IN AMERICA, 2006) and are extending their reach all over the city to such venues as Barbès and The Parkside Lounge.
If rock bands can play in bars, why not opera singers?... OOT was formed in 2005 as a performance outlet for General Managing Diva Anne Ricci, Co-Directors Jessica Miller, Carla Roberts and Elizabeth Gibbs and their like-minded colleagues in the performing arts. The troupe presents opera's greatest hits as well as its lesser-known works in a refreshingly casual manner. Its mission is to promote opera as a viable, living and progressive art form deserving a place on the American cultural landscape.
"raucous and sublime... un-elitist, imperfect, and fun"- NY SUN, Alec Magnet
