Amy Kohn / Akiko Pavolka
Amy Kohn / Akiko Pavolka Tickets and Information
Synopsis
Amy and Akiko's CDs became friends before they did, displayed next to each other at a Brooklyn record store! Intrigued by the CD art, Amy & Akiko each bought each others records, & Wow! Musical compatriots inside! They are thrilled to meld their music-adventures into one evening. Since the release of Im in Crinoline at Joes Pub last year, songs from the album have been aired on BBC Radio 3s Mixing It,to innovative stations in the Netherlands & Germany, to WNYCs own Spinning on Air: Boiling over with life...Instruments that you dont usually hear together playing melodies that arent quite like anyone elses. You just dive in & enjoy (David Garland). This energetic Brooklyn pianist/accordionist with a voice as idiosyncratic as they come...which is all part of the fun (Pitchfork Media Feature) gives us songs that are not like much else you've ever heard (Three Weeks, Scotland). Amy & her glittery Fantini just returned from Italys UBI Jazz Festival & Festival Segnali All Orizzonte, performing to peacocks & Italians, all of whom fell in love with Amys whimsical, sometimes quirkily structured, unconventional beauty.
Akiko Pavolka is a New York based singer/songwriter who's strikingly original compositions blend pop and jazz with the music and sensibilities of her native Japan. Together with her band "House of Illusion" she has spent the past ten years developing a very personal sonic universe that is sometimes humorous, sometimes beautiful, sometimes frightening, but alwaysher own. Her most recent release "Begin Again" on Tone of a Pitch Records(Portugal) is her third as a leader. She is working on her 4th album rightnow which is due to be released at the end of 2007.
