Synopsis:
Do not miss the return to Joe's Pub by the greatest unrecognized soul singer of the past forty years, Miss Bettye Lavette. The "Great Lady of Soul" has rightfully earned her reputation as a true legend of soul music, and as a performer with a magnificent voice, and dynamic stage presence. With her first R&B hit in 1962 at the age of sixteen on Atlantic; 28 singles on a variety of labels including Epic, Motown, West End, and Atco hitting various charts in the 60's, 70's and 80's; and a 100,000-selling underground disco classic "Doin' The Best I Can" on West End in 1978; Bettye's path has also led to Broadway where she starred in the Tony-nominated hit show, Bubbling Brown Sugar with the legendary Cab Calloway. Now, Lavette's stone-to-the-bone vocalizing is due for larger recognition with the recent CD, A Woman Like Me (her first U.S. album release since a 1982 Motown album), produced by Dennis Walker (long-time producer and songwriter with Robert Cray.
