In lie, lay, laid audiences are given the opportunity to observe intimate physical acts at a distance by sitting above a sunken stage and looking down upon a grid, stacks of mattresses and four dancers. In this world premiere, dancers arrange and rearrange themselves upon twin mattresses, framing the relationship of bodies while complicating efforts to smoothly negotiate choreography. The mattresses transform an abstract physical construction of bodies wrapping around one another into an emotionally powerful narrative. This context is the emotional heart of the piece -- a kinesthetic connection to home, sleep, and sex.
