Synopsis:
Step into the haunting yet savagely funny world of John Millington Synge--one of the most influential figures in the Irish literary renaissance, and a major influence on such playwrights as Samuel Beckett and Eugene O'Neill. Galway, Ireland's DRUID theater company brings to Washington a double-bill event featuring two productions from "DruidSynge," the internationally acclaimed celebration of their house playwright's complete canon of work.

In The Shadow of the Glen, a farmer tests his wife's fidelity by feigning death. And in The Playboy of the Western World--Synge's most famous work--a man who boasts that he killed his father becomes a local hero. Of the dramatist's comic opus, Variety says "it's hard to imagine a better production of this defining play." The evening is helmed by Druid's founding artistic director Garry Hynes, the first woman to win a Best Director Tony Award (for The Beauty Queen of Leenane, which Druid launched to Broadway). The magnificent ensemble acting and earthy bluntness in "DruidSynge" landed it on many Top 10 lists in 2006, when it was the theatrical centerpiece of the Lincoln Center Festival. The New York Times raved "it's some of the most gorgeous rustic language you'll ever hear on stage, language almost Shakespearean in its texture and vitality." Part of the etcetera series.
